Action Needed to Deal with Abandoned Vessels

July 2009

The recent torching of a tugboat in Sooke Harbour highlights the need for law reform in order to deal with the growing number of abandoned vessels that clutter waters around BC, posing serious safety and environmental risks. In an editorial published July 15, 2009, in the Victoria Times Colonist, the ELC’s Legal Director Calvin Sandborn outlines the problems caused by derelict vessels and proposes solutions. Last fall, ELC articled student Tim Thielmann and ELC Clinic student Daleen Thomas researched the issue and produced a report “Traffic Congestion and Human Waste Dumping in the Saanich Inlet.” The ELC will continue to monitor this issue.
