Although mining has significant and ongoing impacts on communities, it is the only resource industry in BC that has not had a comprehensive legal review from a public interest perspective.
The ELC has long worked on mining law reform projects, and over the past year we partnered with Fair Mining Collaborative, Mining Watch Canada, and First Nations Women Advocating for Responsible Mining to build a comprehensive mining law reform platform. The project consulted with groups throughout the province to gather feedback and to create a network, to which at least 30 organizations in BC have signed on to support.
On May 15, the ELC joined with project partners, organizations, and community groups throughout the province to officially launch the platform and the province-wide network. The platform consists of nine reports and targets specific mining law reform opportunities in BC.
